Beginner Yoga Is a Welcoming Place

Yoga has been around for thousands of years. It's been practiced in spiritual settings as a form of meditation, incorporated into gym classes, done on mountain sides and even in the space of one's own home. In recent years, yoga has become a favorite pastime in Clifton, but you don't need to develop a yogi lifestyle to enjoy the many benefits of the practice. For those who are new to this spiritual and physical practice, there are several things you should know about your first yoga class at Clifton Yoga Center.

Experience Your First Yoga Class

The most important thing you need to know about a yoga class at Clifton Yoga Center is that you are welcome. As a rule, yoga is a practice that is both inclusive and inviting, and this is certainly the case at Clifton Yoga Center. As you enter your first class, expect a warm welcome.

Here are a few things you can do to make everyone's yoga experience more enjoyable:

  • Leave your cell phone off or on silent. Yoga is a serene and spiritual practice. Don't bring the outside world in with you. Give others in your Clifton Yoga Center class the chance at relaxation and meditation they are seeking.
  • Wear something comfortable and appropriate.  Wear something that you can move and bend in freely and that won't make a lot of noise as you shift from one pose to another.
  • No chatting. In some fitness classes, giggling in the back of the class with a friend is totally fine. In yoga, that isn't the case. In addition to being a form of fitness it is a method of stress management. Give others in the class the chance to relax and engage in meditation during the course.

Let your Clifton Yoga Center yoga instructor know that this is your first class. If you are nervous, go ahead and take a spot in the back of the class. Follow along as your instructor guides you through the sequence of poses to the best of your ability and with time, you will be more confident and comfortable with the yoga sequences.

If at any point you are feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to yourself and enter a simple pose, like child's pose, or just sit or lie down quietly on your mat. This will give you a chance to relax your muscles and reset your mind so you can start again and enjoy the spiritual and physical benefits of the practice.

What to expect during Reiki Circles: Deepen your connection to self and invite deep peace and happiness...The healing circle will begin with a brief Reiki discussion, followed by guided pranayama (breathing), followed by individual Reiki and guided yoga centered meditation from an experienced Reiki Master, Reiki sharing, time for discussion and cooperative healing.  Meditation topics will vary, but will include yoga based themes such as Dharma, Kharma, Ananda (bliss), transformation, finding balance, understanding your purpose, destiny and abundance.  All are welcome to attend.  No experience necessary.  Beginners welcome.

What to expect during Yoga with Reiki Class:  This is a Yoga class, all levels/ beginners welcome, where Reiki is given to each person individually in the beginning and end of class, with the channel remaining open throughout the whole class.  The format is the same as the Friday evening yoga class, however the class is 30 minutes longer.  All are welcome.

Meet the Teacher

Meet Amanda

Amanda has been studying and practicing Yoga since the late 1990s.  Amanda is a certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher whose knowledge of yoga comes from both the study and practice of Kripalu Yoga, Pranotthon Yoga, Iyengar yoga, Hatha Yoga, Bikram yoga, Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, meditation, and pranayama.  Amanda has most recently been assisting at Yoga Teacher Trainings in New York and New Jersey, Pranotthan Yoga Teacher Trainings as well as assisting at various programs at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health.  Amanda's yoga classes are taught with a balanced, continuous flow of Reiki infused yogasana sequences that build strength and stability while encouraging peace and serenity.  Beginners are always welcome, as various options are given throughout the class.

Amanda has been studying Reiki since 2006 and is a certified Usui Shiki Ryoho Master (2007), certified Usui Reiki Ryoho Master, and a certified International Center for Reiki Training Master Level Practitioner (2013).  Reiki services include full treatments, Chakra balancing and distance Reiki.

Amanda takes pride in making Yoga and Reiki accessible to as many people as possible, by creating smoothly sequenced Reiki infused yoga classes that stretch, tone and balance your body, calm your mind and uplift your spirit.
